ABOUT

TWO COACHES. ONE PHILOSOPHY.

How Origin Sports Academy was built, who built it, and what we believe about the work.

THE FOUNDERS

Two paths. One court.

Mark Maynard

Co-founder, Lead Trainer

Long before Origin had a name, the work was already happening. Mark spent years training athletes in community gyms across the GTA, fundamentals, IQ, the parts of the game that don't show up on a highlight reel. Some of those athletes went on to play professionally. Most didn't, and that was always beside the point. The work didn't change based on who was on the floor.

Fifteen years in, Mark still trains with the people teaching the game at the highest level. Phil Handy's 94 Feet of Game coaching certification in Los Angeles, shooting work with BriAnna Garza. The kids he coaches are learning. He's still learning too.

Clive Daniel

Co-founder

Clive brings the long view. He's seen the full arc, from grassroots fundamentals to college recruitment to the professional game. He knows what travels and what doesn't, what coaches sell and what actually shows up under pressure.

On the floor, his coaching looks different from what most people expect. He's calm. He doesn't fill every silence with instruction. When a player gets stuck, wrong read, blown rotation, fumbled handle, Clive doesn't always step in. Sometimes he watches them work through it. The understanding a player builds for themselves lasts longer than the understanding handed to them.

PHILOSOPHY

“We named it Origin because that's where the work starts.
Not the highlight reel.
Not the scholarship.
The point where a player begins, and what you build from there.”

That's why Friday Sessions are structured by progression, not by age group. A brand-new player and a kid two years from a college commitment can train in the same gym, working on the same fundamentals at different scales, because the floor is the same and the work is the same. A hooper is a hooper. Different ages, different levels, different journeys. One court, one family.

RITUAL

“At Origin, we end every session the same way.
Hands in. Origin on 3, Family on 6.”

It's small. It's repeatable. It's the only sentence that ends every Friday at the Sportsplex.

STANDARDS

“We measure the program by who walks out of it,
not who walks into it.”

The kid who shows up at 11 will be a different player at 13. The kid who shows up at 14 will be a different player at 16. That arc, slow, specific, individual, is the program. Not the hour on the floor. Not the number of sessions in the pack. The arc is what we're accountable for.
